Preparing for a flooring installation
It is fun to get a new floor, but the installation can be disruptive. Preparing ahead of time makes the process go more smoothly. The following tips can set the scene for installation day:
- Arrange for children and pets to be kept away from the workspace
- Schedule to be at home for the installation; you may be needed to sign-off on any last minute changes
- Clear out furniture, furnishing, and appliances from the installation area; remember, if you have natural gas or propane appliances to have them disconnected and reconnected by a professional
- Clear a space adjacent to the installation as a workspace
- There should be power, lighting, and access to water for then workers
- Remove and dispose of the old flooring
- Prepare the subfloor if directed
- If you are getting a hardwood floor, the flooring will be delivered ahead of time so it can acclimate to its new home; wood can expand or contract when in a new environment, that needs to happen before the floor is permanently affixed
